Sandhwan is a village of Kot Kapura tehsil in Faridkot district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Kot Kapura, about 3 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kot Kapura community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035581, and it covers 994 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 6,080 people in Sandhwan: 3,203 men and 2,877 women, living in 1,242 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 994 hectares, the population density works out to about 612 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 898 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 769, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 4,441 people, about 73 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 59.82 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 67.6 per cent and women at 51.23 per cent. The census recorded 2,136 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 1,696 main workers, the largest group, 896, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 532 other workers in trade, transport and services and 238 cultivators on their own land. A further 440 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Kot Kapura, the tehsil headquarters, and Faridkot town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel.
