Where is Hiranwali?

Hiranwali is a village in Fazilka tehsil of Fazilka district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Fazilka, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Fazilka community development block and is served by the Hirawali gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035122, and it covers 724 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,863 people in Hiranwali: 975 men and 888 women, living in 340 households, an average of about 5.5 people per household. Spread over its 724 hectares, the population density works out to about 257 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 911 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 254, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 481 people, about 26 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 66.94 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 76.61 per cent and women at 56.42 per cent. The census recorded 743 workers, about 40 per cent of the village. Of the 679 main workers, the largest group, 275, were agricultural labourers, ahead of 270 cultivators on their own land and 85 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 64 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Hiranwali's land. Of the village's 724 hectares, 654 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (654 hectares). About 68 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 312 cultivators and 293 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Fazilka, the tehsil headquarters, and Fazilka town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Beganwali, Jandwala Kharta, Banwala Hanwanta and Sabuana.
