Where is Wadi?

Wadi is a village of Jalalabad tehsil in Fazilka district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Guru Har Sahai, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Mamdot community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034795, and it covers 150 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 425 people in Wadi: 219 men and 206 women, living in 68 households, an average of about 6.2 people per household. Spread over its 150 hectares, the population density works out to about 283 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 941 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 61, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 247 people, about 58 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 57.69 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 62.64 per cent and women at 52.75 per cent. The census recorded 187 workers, about 44 per cent of the village. Of the 132 main workers, the largest group, 73, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 32 agricultural labourers and 27 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 55 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Wadi's land. Of the village's 150 hectares, 135 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (135 hectares). About 14 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. The census recorded 73 cultivators and 78 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Jalalabad, the tehsil headquarters, and Fazilka town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Awan, Maddike, Ahmad Dhandi and Chak Maddike.
