Where is Awan?

Awan is a village of Zira tehsil in Ferozepur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Zira, about 6 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Zira community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034418, and it covers 198 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 469 people in Awan: 248 men and 221 women, living in 79 households, an average of about 5.9 people per household. Spread over its 198 hectares, the population density works out to about 237 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 891 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 60, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 55 people, about 12 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 69.68 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 76.28 per cent and women at 62.37 per cent. The census recorded 156 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Farming covers most of Awan's land. Of the village's 198 hectares, 182 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (152 hectares). About 16 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. With 116 cultivators and 15 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Sher Singhwala, Wara Pohwindian, Ratoul Bet and Katora (Zira).
