Where is Chakkian?

Chakkian is a village of Zira tehsil in Ferozepur district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Makhu, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Makhu community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 034275, and it covers 231 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,050 people in Chakkian: 543 men and 507 women, living in 210 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 231 hectares, the population density works out to about 454 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 934 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 147, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 690 people, about 66 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 61.46 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 68.56 per cent and women at 54.16 per cent. The census recorded 398 workers, about 38 per cent of the village. Of the 312 main workers, the largest group, 152, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 103 agricultural labourers and 52 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 86 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chakkian's land. Of the village's 231 hectares, 210 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (44 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (167 hectares). About 21 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 157 cultivators and 160 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
