The 2011 directory recorded Dera Baba Nanak, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Kalanour community development block and has its own gram panchayat. The 2011 census counted 712 people in Barila Kalan: 383 men and 329 women, living in 112 households, an average of about 6.4 people per household.
