Where is Fazlabad?

Fazlabad is a village in Batala tehsil of Gurdaspur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Batala, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dera Baba Nanak community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 028866, and it covers 209 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,008 people in Fazlabad: 516 men and 492 women, living in 180 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 209 hectares, the population density works out to about 482 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 953 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 120, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 182 people, about 18 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.98 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.52 per cent and women at 75.17 per cent. The census recorded 646 workers, about 64 per cent of the village. Of the 312 main workers, the largest group, 134, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 125 other workers in trade, transport and services and 53 agricultural labourers. A further 334 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (2 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (178 hectares). About 28 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 196 cultivators and 120 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
