Where is Ahrana?

Ahrana is a village of Hoshiarpur tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hoshiarpur-II community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031742, and it covers 1,118 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 5,495 people in Ahrana: 2,853 men and 2,642 women, living in 1,153 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 1,118 hectares, the population density works out to about 492 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 926 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 615, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 2,881 people, about 52 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 79.45 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 83.7 per cent and women at 74.95 per cent. The census recorded 1,918 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 1,704 main workers, the largest group, 896, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 404 cultivators on their own land and 380 agricultural labourers. A further 214 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Ahrana's land. Of the village's 1,118 hectares, 1,036 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 1,017 hectares of it were irrigated. About 9 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 12 hours a day. The census recorded 425 cultivators and 449 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

The directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 15 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Hoshiarpur, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Ajram, Marnaian Kalan, Ramu Thiara and Marnaian Khurd.
