Where is Bassi Muda?

Bassi Muda is a village in Hoshiarpur tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hoshiarpur-I community development block and is served by the Bassi--Muda gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031583, and it covers 40 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 891 people in Bassi Muda: 442 men and 449 women, living in 196 households, an average of about 4.5 people per household. Spread over its 40 hectares, the population density works out to about 2,228 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1016 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 87, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 404 people, about 45 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 85.57 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 91.65 per cent and women at 79.71 per cent. The census recorded 415 workers, about 47 per cent of the village. Of the 315 main workers, the largest group, 274, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 19 cultivators on their own land and 13 agricultural labourers. A further 100 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Bassi Muda's land. Of the village's 40 hectares, 30 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 28 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (28 hectares). About 9 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
