Where is Chahalpur?

Chahalpur is a village in Garhshankar tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Garhshankar, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Garhshankar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031971, and it covers 310 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,023 people in Chahalpur: 507 men and 516 women, living in 202 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 310 hectares, the population density works out to about 330 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1018 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 111, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 559 people, about 55 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 74.78 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 79.91 per cent and women at 69.83 per cent. The census recorded 315 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 201 main workers, the largest group, 98, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 54 household industry workers and 26 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 114 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chahalpur's land. Of the village's 310 hectares, 290 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (290 hectares). About 20 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. With 102 cultivators and 76 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
