Where is Chhangial?

Chhangial is a village in Dasua tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dasua, about 17 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dasua community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030954, and it covers 161 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 320 people in Chhangial: 154 men and 166 women, living in 77 households, an average of about 4.2 people per household. Spread over its 161 hectares, the population density works out to about 199 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1078 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 36, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 119 people, about 37 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 83.8 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 89.23 per cent and women at 79.22 per cent. The census recorded 98 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 70 main workers, the largest group, 50, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 16 cultivators on their own land and 3 household industry workers. A further 28 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Chhangial's land. Of the village's 161 hectares, 41 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 8 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (8 hectares). About 115 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 16 cultivators and 2 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Dasua, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include San Chak, Sanghwal, Koi and Sansarpur.
