Where is Darya?

Darya is a village of Dasua tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Urmar Tanda, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Tanda community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030702, and it covers 131 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 564 people in Darya: 291 men and 273 women, living in 126 households, an average of about 4.5 people per household. Spread over its 131 hectares, the population density works out to about 431 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 938 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 71, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 111 people, about 20 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 82.56 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 83.98 per cent and women at 81.01 per cent. The census recorded 165 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 163 main workers, the largest group, 75, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 53 cultivators on their own land and 35 agricultural labourers. A further 2 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Darya's land. Of the village's 131 hectares, 110 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (110 hectares). About 21 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 53 cultivators and 35 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
