Where is Dhanoya?

Dhanoya is a village in Mukerian tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 9 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Mukerian community development block and is served by the Dhanoya--206 gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031068, and it covers 509 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,895 people in Dhanoya: 974 men and 921 women, living in 389 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 509 hectares, the population density works out to about 372 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 946 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 184, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 358 people, about 19 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 84.98 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 88.55 per cent and women at 81.26 per cent. The census recorded 485 workers, about 26 per cent of the village. Of the 476 main workers, the largest group, 316, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 122 cultivators on their own land and 35 agricultural labourers. A further 9 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Dhanoya's land. Of the village's 509 hectares, 369 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 340 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (340 hectares). About 138 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 12 hours a day. With 122 cultivators and 38 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
