Where is Dhugga Kalan?

Dhugga Kalan is a village in Dasua tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Dasua, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhunga community development block and is served by the Dhugga--Kalan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030856, and it covers 285 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,930 people in Dhugga Kalan: 961 men and 969 women, living in 393 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 285 hectares, the population density works out to about 677 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1008 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 193, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 949 people, about 49 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 88.77 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 93.07 per cent and women at 84.5 per cent. The census recorded 537 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 454 main workers, the largest group, 289, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 81 cultivators on their own land and 75 agricultural labourers. A further 83 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Dhugga Kalan's land. Of the village's 285 hectares, 252 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 245 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (245 hectares). About 29 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 113 cultivators and 77 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

The directory recorded Dasua, about 8 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the village has its own railway station. Dasua, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Dehriwala, Kotli, Shekhupur Kalan and Nangal Khunga.
