Where is Jharera?

Jharera is a village in Mukerian tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mukerian, about 21 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Talwara community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031340, and it covers 229 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 926 people in Jharera: 451 men and 475 women, living in 218 households, an average of about 4.2 people per household. Spread over its 229 hectares, the population density works out to about 404 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1053 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 121, about 13 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 54 people, about 6 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 89.32 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 93.78 per cent and women at 85.2 per cent. The census recorded 314 workers, about 34 per cent of the village. Of the 270 main workers, the largest group, 137, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 126 agricultural labourers and 5 household industry workers. A further 44 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Jharera's land. Of the village's 229 hectares, 109 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 100 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (100 hectares). About 23 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. The census recorded 143 cultivators and 163 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Mukerian, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Kartoli, Bhatoli, Sikri Uraf Ramgarh and Bhabnaur.
