Where is Johal?

Johal is a village of Dasua tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Urmar Tanda, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhunga community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030862, and it covers 285 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,060 people in Johal: 1,050 men and 1,010 women, living in 425 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 285 hectares, the population density works out to about 723 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 962 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 240, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 936 people, about 45 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 79.23 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 83.24 per cent and women at 75.14 per cent. The census recorded 738 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 686 main workers, the largest group, 306, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 230 agricultural labourers and 140 cultivators on their own land. A further 52 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
