Where is Kunt?

Kunt is a village of Hoshiarpur tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 23 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hoshiarpur-I community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031669, and it covers 147 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 687 people in Kunt: 347 men and 340 women, living in 145 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 147 hectares, the population density works out to about 467 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 980 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 81, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 428 people, about 62 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 87.29 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 93.07 per cent and women at 81.52 per cent. The census recorded 192 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 187 main workers, the largest group, 91, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 45 cultivators on their own land and 44 agricultural labourers. A further 5 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Kunt's land. Of the village's 147 hectares, 124 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 122 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (122 hectares). About 18 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 4 hours a day. With 46 cultivators and 45 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
