Where is Lasara?

Lasara is a village in Garhshankar tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Garhshankar, about 19 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Mahilpur community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031948, and it covers 425 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,024 people in Lasara: 520 men and 504 women, living in 225 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 425 hectares, the population density works out to about 241 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 969 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 120, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 111 people, about 11 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 86.5 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 90.93 per cent and women at 82.08 per cent. The census recorded 243 workers, about 24 per cent of the village. Of the 76 main workers, the largest group, 63, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 10 household industry workers and 2 cultivators on their own land. A further 167 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Lasara's land. Of the village's 425 hectares, 255 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 27 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (27 hectares). About 25 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 41 cultivators and 33 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
