Where is Manan?

Manan is a village in Hoshiarpur tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 11 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hoshiarpur-II community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031492, and it covers 392 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,358 people in Manan: 676 men and 682 women, living in 289 households, an average of about 4.7 people per household. Spread over its 392 hectares, the population density works out to about 346 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1009 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 156, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 975 people, about 72 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 79.53 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 83.47 per cent and women at 75.54 per cent. The census recorded 452 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 386 main workers, the largest group, 258, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 72 cultivators on their own land and 56 agricultural labourers. A further 66 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Manan's land. Of the village's 392 hectares, 145 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (70 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (75 hectares). About 98 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. The census recorded 72 cultivators and 91 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Hoshiarpur, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel.
