Dhut Kalan is a village of Hoshiarpur tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Gardhiwala, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Bhunga community development block and is served by the Dhut--Kalan gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031384, and it covers 492 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,567 people in Dhut Kalan: 1,300 men and 1,267 women, living in 555 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 492 hectares, the population density works out to about 522 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 975 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 229, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,337 people, about 52 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 86.48 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 89.2 per cent and women at 83.73 per cent. The census recorded 719 workers, about 28 per cent of the village. Of the 538 main workers, the largest group, 286, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 151 cultivators on their own land and 90 agricultural labourers. A further 181 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
