Where is Phadman?

Phadman is a village in Hoshiarpur tehsil of Hoshiarpur district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 16 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Hoshiarpur-II community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 031746, and it covers 75 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 875 people in Phadman: 450 men and 425 women, living in 163 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 75 hectares, the population density works out to about 1,167 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 944 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 126, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 72 people, about 8 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 70.49 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.8 per cent and women at 66.03 per cent. The census recorded 440 workers, about 50 per cent of the village. Of the 235 main workers, the largest group, 110, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 70 agricultural labourers and 54 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 205 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Phadman's land. Of the village's 75 hectares, 67 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 58 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (58 hectares). About 8 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 192 cultivators and 179 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

The directory recorded Hoshiarpur, about 16 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Hoshiarpur, the tehsil headquarters, and Hoshiarpur city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Tanuli, Hukran, Marnaian Khurd and Rajpur Bhaian.
