Where is Ralhan?

Ralhan is a village of Dasua tehsil in Hoshiarpur district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Urmar Tanda, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dasua community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030811, and it covers 240 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,627 people in Ralhan: 810 men and 817 women, living in 364 households, an average of about 4.5 people per household. Spread over its 240 hectares, the population density works out to about 678 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1009 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 162, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 766 people, about 47 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 88.12 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 92.9 per cent and women at 83.53 per cent. The census recorded 501 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 410 main workers, the largest group, 286, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 86 cultivators on their own land and 19 agricultural labourers. A further 91 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (205 hectares). About 29 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
