Where is Bal Hukmi?

Bal Hukmi is a village in Nakodar tehsil of Jalandhar district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Doaba region, and the 2011 directory recorded Nakodar, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nakodar community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029911, and it covers 65 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 513 people in Bal Hukmi: 267 men and 246 women, living in 117 households, an average of about 4.4 people per household. Spread over its 65 hectares, the population density works out to about 789 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 921 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 51, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 244 people, about 48 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 64.72 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 67.92 per cent and women at 61.26 per cent. The census recorded 220 workers, about 43 per cent of the village. Of the 205 main workers, the largest group, 149, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 41 cultivators on their own land and 12 agricultural labourers. A further 15 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Bal Hukmi's land. Of the village's 65 hectares, 56 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 55 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (55 hectares). About 9 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 42 cultivators and 12 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

The directory recorded Nakodar, about 4 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was five to ten kilometres away. Nakodar, the tehsil headquarters, and Jalandhar town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Khursheidpur, Ladhran, Gandhran and Kotla Bhagu.
