Where is Pabwan?

Pabwan is a village of Phillaur tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Nurmahal, about 4 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Nurmahal community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 030087, and it covers 165 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,081 people in Pabwan: 534 men and 547 women, living in 234 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 165 hectares, the population density works out to about 655 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1024 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 86, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 700 people, about 65 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 78.49 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 83.57 per cent and women at 73.62 per cent. The census recorded 348 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 221 main workers, the largest group, 167, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 49 cultivators on their own land and 3 agricultural labourers. A further 127 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.
