Where is Rupewali?

Rupewali is a village of Shahkot tehsil in Jalandhar district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Shahkot, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Lohian Khas community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029841, and it covers 312 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,027 people in Rupewali: 536 men and 491 women, living in 192 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 312 hectares, the population density works out to about 329 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 916 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 99, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 516 people, about 50 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (281 hectares). About 25 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 7 hours a day. The census recorded 93 cultivators and 136 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Shahkot, the tehsil headquarters, and Jalandhar town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Darapur, Khurampur, Kasupur and Malliwal.
