Where is Jati Umra?

Jati Umra is a village of Khadur Sahib tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Jandiala, about 10 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Khadur Sahib community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 038337, and it covers 131 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 607 people in Jati Umra: 294 men and 313 women, living in 125 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 131 hectares, the population density works out to about 463 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1065 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 68, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 222 people, about 37 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 68.09 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 71.43 per cent and women at 64.84 per cent. The census recorded 218 workers, about 36 per cent of the village. Of the 139 main workers, the largest group, 65, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 49 other workers in trade, transport and services and 24 agricultural labourers. A further 79 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (116 hectares). About 15 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
