Where is Nona?

Nona is a village of Tarn Taran tehsil in Tarn Taran district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Tarn Taran, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Tarn Taran community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 037906, and it covers 266 hectares.

The 2011 census record lists this village's name as "None", an error carried through the handbook data. The village's own gram panchayat is named Nona, and that is the name used here.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,761 people in Nona: 914 men and 847 women, living in 346 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 266 hectares, the population density works out to about 662 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 927 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 203, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 708 people, about 40 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 69.96 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 74.19 per cent and women at 65.43 per cent. The census recorded 567 workers, about 32 per cent of the village. Of the 521 main workers, the largest group, 269, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 133 cultivators on their own land and 107 agricultural labourers. A further 46 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Nona's land. Of the village's 266 hectares, 240 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (240 hectares). About 26 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 134 cultivators and 115 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
