Where is Rampur Khalian?

Rampur Khalian is a village of Phagwara tehsil in Kapurthala district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Phagwara, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Phagwara community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029584, and it covers 218 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 681 people in Rampur Khalian: 341 men and 340 women, living in 140 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 218 hectares, the population density works out to about 313 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 997 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 68, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 153 people, about 22 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 87.28 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 91.39 per cent and women at 83.28 per cent. The census recorded 405 workers, about 59 per cent of the village. Of the 387 main workers, the largest group, 320, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 44 cultivators on their own land and 17 agricultural labourers. A further 18 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Phagwara, the tehsil headquarters, and Kapurthala town, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Harbanspur, Randhirgarh, Gulabgarh Jattan and Bir Khurampur.
