Where is Tashpur?

Tashpur is a village of Sultanpur Lodhi tehsil in Kapurthala district, Punjab, in the Doaba region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Sultanpur Lodhi, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Sultanpur Lodhi community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 029502, and it covers 267 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 961 people in Tashpur: 484 men and 477 women, living in 180 households, an average of about 5.3 people per household. Spread over its 267 hectares, the population density works out to about 360 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 986 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 95, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 229 people, about 24 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 74.83 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 79.95 per cent and women at 69.56 per cent. The census recorded 296 workers, about 31 per cent of the village. Of the 240 main workers, the largest group, 132, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 95 other workers in trade, transport and services and 13 household industry workers. A further 56 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Tashpur's land. Of the village's 267 hectares, 242 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (242 hectares). About 24 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 134 cultivators and 48 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Neighbouring villages include Rampur Jagir, Haidrabad Dona, Maniala and Rawal.
