Where is Billon?

Billon is a village of Samrala tehsil in Ludhiana district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Machhiwara, about 14 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Machhiwara community development block and is served by the Hassanpur gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 032980, and it covers 338 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 145 people in Billon: 80 men and 65 women, living in 30 households, an average of about 4.8 people per household. Spread over its 338 hectares, the population density works out to about 43 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 812 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 20, about 14 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 75 people, about 52 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 77.6 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 81.16 per cent and women at 73.21 per cent. The census recorded 63 workers, about 43 per cent of the village. Of the 63 main workers, the largest group, 26, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 17 agricultural labourers and 15 household industry workers.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Billon's land. Of the village's 338 hectares, 236 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (236 hectares). About 102 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 26 cultivators and 17 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
