History

Samrala is an old qasba town of the Ludhiana plain whose origins, like many market towns of the region, are unrecorded in the grand histories but written into the landscape of its bazaars and its position on the road between Ludhiana and Chandigarh. It grew as a mandi and administrative town serving the villages around it, and in the modern era became the headquarters of Samrala tehsil, one of Ludhiana district's sub-divisions.

The town lies in the Puadh region — the cultural belt stretching across eastern Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib and Rupnagar — described in recent reporting as rich in culture though politically under-heard. Its old town fabric, with a main chowk and dense bazaar streets, still reflects its qasba past.

Geography & people

Samrala sits on the Chandigarh–Ludhiana highway, about 35 kilometres east of Ludhiana city. The 2011 census counted 19,678 residents in the municipal council, with Hindus and Sikhs in nearly equal numbers and a literacy rate above 83 per cent — well over the state average. Punjabi, in its Puadhi colouring, is the everyday tongue. Grain trade, small industry and government offices employ the town.

Places of interest

The town's main chowk and old bazaar remain its social heart. The historic mosque of Samrala — visited often by the Punjabi poet Lal Singh Dil, who spent time in the town — is a reminder of its composite past. The surrounding countryside, with villages like the nearby Machhiwara of Sikh historical fame, rewards the curious traveller.

Notable people

The Punjabi poet Lal Singh Dil (1943–2007), known for his stark, humane verse about labour and displacement, spent time in Samrala and is remembered in the town's literary memory. Beyond him, Samrala's prominence has come less from individuals than from its role as a tehsil town and as part of the Puadh region's cultural identity.
