Where is Ghulal?

Ghulal is a village of Samrala tehsil in Ludhiana district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Samrala, about 8 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Samrala community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033113, and it covers 417 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,177 people in Ghulal: 1,159 men and 1,018 women, living in 434 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 417 hectares, the population density works out to about 522 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 878 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 185, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 888 people, about 41 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 88.6 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 93.52 per cent and women at 82.97 per cent. The census recorded 803 workers, about 37 per cent of the village. Of the 730 main workers, the largest group, 383, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 214 cultivators on their own land and 104 agricultural labourers. A further 73 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (239 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (127 hectares). About 51 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 218 cultivators and 114 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
