Jhamat (Payal) is a village in Payal tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Maloud, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dehlon community development block and is served by the Jhamat gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033314, and it covers 548 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,144 people in Jhamat (Payal): 1,127 men and 1,017 women, living in 424 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 548 hectares, the population density works out to about 391 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 902 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 187, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 1,004 people, about 47 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 81.4 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 86.58 per cent and women at 75.67 per cent. The census recorded 749 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 636 main workers, the largest group, 392, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 120 cultivators on their own land and 72 agricultural labourers. A further 113 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from canals (41 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (428 hectares). About 79 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Payal, the tehsil headquarters, and Ludhiana city, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Kulahr, Siarh, Nanakpur Jagera and Zirakh.
