History
Doraha grew where the imperial highway — today's Grand Trunk Road — met the needs of travellers. The District Census Handbook records an old serai here, the Sarai Lashkari, said to have been built in the time of Emperor Aurangzeb: 'it must have been an impressive structure at the time of its construction but now it is in ruins.' Serais like this, spaced a day's march apart, were the Mughal empire's highway infrastructure, sheltering armies, merchants and pilgrims.
The town also carries Sikh history: a historic gurdwara commemorates Guru Hargobind, who halted here during his Malwa travels of the 1630s. In the nineteenth and twentieth centuries Doraha became an important centre of the timber trade, with logs floated down the Sirhind Canal from the Sutlej — the District Census Handbook describes it as an important centre of timber trade where sleepers, battens and rafting timber changed hands. The community development block office made it an administrative hub for the surrounding villages. Industry followed the highway in the later twentieth century, and today Doraha's economy mixes trade, small manufacturing and commuter links to Ludhiana.
Geography & people
Doraha lies 21 kilometres from Ludhiana on the GT Road toward Ambala, in Payal tehsil, with a railway station on the Amritsar–Delhi line. The 2011 census counted 25,424 residents in the municipal council. Punjabi is the main language. The town serves as a market and service centre for the surrounding villages, with industrial units along the highway providing employment, and its schools and colleges serving the villages of the wider Payal block, whose development office is also here — keeping Doraha the administrative centre of the surrounding countryside.
Places of interest
The ruined Sarai Lashkari — the Mughal serai — is the town's heritage landmark, its massive gateways still conveying the scale of the imperial road system. The historic Gurdwara of Guru Hargobind draws devotees, and the town's old bazaar streets preserve the feel of a highway qasba. Nearby Ghurani Kalan, eight kilometres away, has another historic gurdwara of the Guru, where his angarkha, a shoe and a manuscript are displayed — together the two shrines make Doraha a regular stop on the Guru Hargobind trail of Malwa.
Notable people
Guru Hargobind is Doraha's great historical visitor — the town's gurdwara keeps his memory, and the tradition of his halt here links Doraha to the Guru's Malwa travels of the 1630s. Beyond that, Doraha's story is the story of its traders and timber merchants rather than of famous individuals.
