Early life

Yograj Singh Bhundel was born on 25 March 1958 in Kanech, a village next to Doraha in Punjab's Ludhiana district. He grew up in an era when Punjab's cricketing infrastructure was thin, and his talent as a fast bowler carried him from local grounds to the national selectors' notice. In 1977 he was picked for the India Under-22 team ahead of a young Kapil Dev — a measure of how highly he was rated.

His first-class career, playing for Punjab and Haryana, was promising: 30 matches, 66 wickets at an average of 26.60. A strong performance for the Board President's XI against Pakistan in 1979 — three wickets for 29 runs — pushed him into the national squad.

Career

Yograj's international career was brief but real: six One Day Internationals, beginning with his ODI debut against New Zealand on 21 December 1980, and a single Test at Wellington on 21 February 1981, where he took one wicket. Injuries then did what opponents could not — they ended his playing career prematurely, closing the chapter before it had properly opened.

He reinvented himself as an actor, entering Punjabi cinema and then Hindi films. His strong screen presence and physicality made him a natural for authoritative and villainous roles. He appeared in Punjabi films including Batwara and worked in Bollywood productions such as Teen Thay Bhai (2011), Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) — fittingly, a film about the runner Milkha Singh, Punjab's other great sporting export — and Singh is Bling (2015).

He was a familiar, imposing presence in Punjabi cinema through the 1990s and 2000s, often cast as the patriarch or the antagonist, and he stayed involved with cricket as a mentor to young Punjab fast bowlers who sought out the man who had once been picked ahead of Kapil Dev, and his outspoken interviews about cricket politics kept him in the headlines long after his playing days ended.

Major works

As a cricketer, his record stands at one Test and six ODIs for India between 1980 and 1981. As an actor, his most visible Hindi roles came in Bhaag Milkha Bhaag and Singh is Bling, while his Punjabi film work made him a familiar face to regional audiences across the 1990s and 2000s. He also became known as a coach and mentor figure in Punjab's cricketing circles.

Personal life

Yograj married Shabnam Singh, with whom he had two sons — Yuvraj and Zoravar. After their divorce he married Punjabi film actress Satveer Kaur, known as Neena Sidhu. He is famously the demanding father-coach behind Yuvraj Singh's career: it was Yograj who pushed his son toward cricket, trained him relentlessly, and shaped the all-rounder who would win India the 2011 World Cup.

Legacy

Yograj Singh's own playing career is a footnote, but his influence on Indian cricket is not. The father who drove Yuvraj to greatness — through methods many called harsh and he called necessary — remains one of the sport's most discussed parent-coaches. His second act as an actor gave him a public life beyond cricket, but history will remember him, fairly or not, as the man who made Yuvraj Singh.
