Kashmir-Bound Bus Stoned Near Doraha, Punjab; No Injuries

A Srinagar-bound private sleeper bus was pelted with stones near Doraha in Punjab's Ludhiana district late on Sunday, a day after another bus of the same company was attacked in Haryana, The Indian Express, The Tribune and UNI reported. No one was hurt, and police say they are checking CCTV footage to identify the attackers.

What happened near Doraha

The Volvo bus, run by Star World Ventures, was travelling from Delhi to Srinagar on the Delhi-Jammu highway when stones were hurled at it around 11 pm on 18 October. Driver Ishfaq Ahmad told The Tribune that women and children were asleep on board. One stone hit a window pane, the Indian Express reported. TV9 Hindi said about 40 passengers were on the bus.

Police response

Khanna Superintendent of Police (Investigation) Rakesh Kumar Yadav told The Indian Express that a police gypsy was sent to escort the bus safely out of Khanna police jurisdiction. Northlines reported that the bus then resumed its journey to Srinagar. Khanna Police confirmed the incident in an official video, Times Now Navbharat reported.

The Haryana attack a day earlier

On Saturday, another bus of the same operator carrying passengers from Jammu and Kashmir was attacked with stones and bricks at a dhaba near Karnal in Haryana, leaving two people injured, according to The Tribune. Police there have described the Karnal incident as arising from a dispute at the dhaba, while Jammu and Kashmir's National Conference has called it a hate crime, as reported earlier by Indian Express. Times Now Navbharat said investigators are checking whether the Doraha attack is linked to that earlier dispute. Police have not confirmed any link or motive.

What happens next

Police are scanning CCTV footage along the highway. No arrests in the Doraha case had been reported by Monday afternoon.

ਸਟਾਰ ਵਰਲਡ ਵੈਂਚਰਜ਼ ਦੀ ਵੋਲਵੋ ਬੱਸ ਦਿੱਲੀ-ਜੰਮੂ ਹਾਈਵੇਅ ਰਾਹੀਂ ਦਿੱਲੀ ਤੋਂ ਸ੍ਰੀਨਗਰ ਜਾ ਰਹੀ ਸੀ ਜਦੋਂ 18 ਅਕਤੂਬਰ ਨੂੰ ਰਾਤ ਕਰੀਬ 11 ਵਜੇ ਉਸ ਉੱਤੇ ਪੱਥਰ ਸੁੱਟੇ ਗਏ। ਡਰਾਈਵਰ ਇਸ਼ਫ਼ਾਕ ਅਹਿਮਦ ਨੇ ਦ ਟ੍ਰਿਬਿਊਨ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਬੱਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਔਰਤਾਂ ਅਤੇ ਬੱਚੇ ਸੁੱਤੇ ਹੋਏ ਸਨ। ਇੰਡੀਅਨ ਐਕਸਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਇੱਕ ਪੱਥਰ ਖਿੜਕੀ ਦੇ ਸ਼ੀਸ਼ੇ ਵਿੱਚ ਵੱਜਿਆ। ਟੀਵੀ9 ਹਿੰਦੀ ਨੇ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਬੱਸ ਵਿੱਚ ਲਗਭਗ 40 ਯਾਤਰੀ ਸਨ।

ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦੀ ਕਾਰਵਾਈ

ਖੰਨਾ ਦੇ ਐੱਸਪੀ (ਇਨਵੈਸਟੀਗੇਸ਼ਨ) ਰਾਕੇਸ਼ ਕੁਮਾਰ ਯਾਦਵ ਨੇ ਇੰਡੀਅਨ ਐਕਸਪ੍ਰੈਸ ਨੂੰ ਦੱਸਿਆ ਕਿ ਬੱਸ ਨੂੰ ਖੰਨਾ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦੇ ਇਲਾਕੇ ਤੋਂ ਸੁਰੱਖਿਅਤ ਬਾਹਰ ਕੱਢਣ ਲਈ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਦੀ ਜਿਪਸੀ ਭੇਜੀ ਗਈ। ਨੌਰਥਲਾਈਨਜ਼ ਮੁਤਾਬਕ ਬੱਸ ਫਿਰ ਸ੍ਰੀਨਗਰ ਵੱਲ ਰਵਾਨਾ ਹੋ ਗਈ। ਟਾਈਮਜ਼ ਨਵਭਾਰਤ ਅਨੁਸਾਰ ਖੰਨਾ ਪੁਲਿਸ ਨੇ ਅਧਿਕਾਰਤ ਵੀਡੀਓ ਜਾਰੀ ਕਰਕੇ ਘਟਨਾ ਦੀ ਪੁਸ਼ਟੀ ਕੀਤੀ।
