Punjab captain Uday Saharan struck an unbeaten 106 on Sunday to pull his side out of early trouble against Chhattisgarh on day one of their Ranji Trophy Elite match in New Chandigarh. Punjab finished at 269 for 4, recovering from 68 for 3 after India captain Shubman Gill fell for 1 on his return to domestic cricket.
How Saharan rescued Punjab
The 22-year-old faced 179 balls and hit 13 fours, according to The Hindu and Sportstar. He leaned on the sweep and slog sweep to handle Chhattisgarh's left-arm spin attack of Dharmendrasinh Jadeja and Ajay Mandal, who bowled 51 overs between them on the day.
Saharan added 130 runs with Prabhsimran Singh, who made a patient 62, and then an unbeaten 71 with Salil Arora, Cricbuzz and Ground News reported. Punjab scored 109 runs in the second session, the only session in which Gill's early exit was the main talking point.
Gill's quiet return
Gill, back for red-ball practice before India's tour of New Zealand, was bowled by Mandal after walking in at number four. Saharan's century overshadowed that dismissal and kept Punjab in control of the first innings. Punjab are still looking for a first win this season after a draw against Assam in round one.
