Punjab open their 2026-27 Ranji Trophy campaign against Assam on Sunday, October 11, at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in Mullanpur, New Chandigarh, with veteran India pacer Umesh Yadav named in the squad as a guest player after leaving Vidarbha. The four-day Elite Group B match starts at 9:30 am.
Who is Umesh Yadav and why does his move matter?
Yadav, 38, made his first-class debut for Vidarbha in 2008 and has taken 380 wickets in 124 first-class matches, according to cricket reports. He has now moved to Punjab after 18 years with his home side. Commentators describe the signing as one meant to add red-ball experience and to mentor a young attack, and Yadav has said Punjab invited him to help younger bowlers with fine-tuning and the mindset for long spells.
Who else is in Punjab's squad?
The 16-man group includes Uday Saharan, Anmolpreet Singh, Ramandeep Singh, Prabhsimran Singh, Nehal Wadhera, Harpreet Brar, Gurnoor Brar, Harnoor Singh, Naman Dhir and Jashanpreet Singh Sidhu, along with spinner Mayank Markande and pacers Baltej Singh and Siddarth Kaul. One report said India Test captain Shubman Gill is expected to play at least one Ranji game for Punjab before India's tour of New Zealand, subject to medical clearance and workload management; that has not been confirmed by the state association.
What does the season look like for Punjab?
After Assam, Punjab host Chhattisgarh from October 18 and Hyderabad from October 26, both in Mullanpur, then travel to Andhra Pradesh from November 2. The tournament then pauses and resumes in January. Assam are led by Denish Das.
Why is Punjab chasing a title?
Punjab last won the Ranji Trophy in 1992-93, a gap of more than three decades, which is why the team has looked outside for experience this season.
