Shubman Gill Bowled for 1 on Ranji Return as Punjab Face Chhattisgarh
Shubman Gill's return to the Ranji Trophy did not go to plan on Sunday. Playing for Punjab against Chhattisgarh at the PCA stadium in New Chandigarh, India's Test and ODI captain was bowled by left-arm spinner Ajay Mandal for just one run after walking in at number four.
How the dismissal happened
Punjab captain Uday Saharan won the toss and chose to bat first. Openers Vihaan Malhotra and Harnoor Singh gave the home side a 55-run start before Mandal removed Harnoor for 20 and Dharmendrasinh Jadeja bowled Vihaan, bringing Gill to the crease. Gill lasted only a handful of balls, according to Sportstar and The Indian Express, before a delivery that held its line went through the gap between his bat and pad and hit the stumps. Punjab were 69 for 3 at that stage.
Why Gill is playing
Gill is not a regular in Punjab's Ranji side because of his India commitments. He missed the opening round, a draw against Assam, and made himself available at the last minute for the second round, Cricinfo reported. He is understood to want match practice in red-ball cricket before India's tour of New Zealand. The ODI series there runs from 4 to 15 November, and Gill's availability for it is limited to the first three matches, according to Cricinfo.
The Hindu noted that he made just 14 runs in his last Ranji appearance. Punjab are still chasing a first win of the season, and Prabhsimran Singh also returned to the squad after finishing his India A duty.
Who is Ajay Mandal?
Mandal made his first-class debut for Chhattisgarh in 2016-17 and is the first Chhattisgarh bowler to reach 100 Ranji Trophy wickets, Sportstar reports. He took two wickets in the first session, including Gill's.
What next for Punjab?
The four-day Elite Group B match runs from 18 to 21 October. With Gill gone early, the responsibility falls on the rest of Punjab's batting line-up, including Prabhsimran, to build a big first-innings total.
How many runs did Shubman Gill score for Punjab?
Gill scored one run before he was bowled by Chhattisgarh left-arm spinner Ajay Mandal on Sunday, 18 October.
Is Shubman Gill captaining Punjab in the Ranji Trophy?

Why did Gill play the Ranji Trophy match?
He wanted red-ball match practice ahead of India's tour of New Zealand, Cricinfo reported.
