Pakistan has pulled out of the men's Asian Champions Trophy in Punjab, and Bangladesh will take its place in the six-team tournament, the Asian Hockey Federation announced on Friday. The event runs from October 27 to November 5 in Jalandhar and Mohali, and hosts India will now open against Bangladesh on October 27.
Why did Pakistan withdraw?
The Pakistan Hockey Federation had asked in September for either the whole tournament or Pakistan's matches to be moved to a neutral venue, citing the sensitive situation between the two countries and the safety of its players and officials, Dawn reported. Hockey India and the AHF turned the request down and said the event would stay in Jalandhar and Mohali. Hockey India secretary general Bhola Nath Singh told Sportstar that Pakistan did not get clearance from its government to travel to India.

Bangladesh, one of two reserve teams along with Oman, accepted the AHF's invitation. The line-up is now India, Japan, China, Malaysia, South Korea and Bangladesh. The India-Pakistan league match planned for November 1 in Jalandhar has been scrapped. Hindustan Times reports India will play Malaysia on that date instead.
