History

Payal's history is the history of a Malwa qasba that became an administrative centre. It served the villages east of Ludhiana as their market and tehsil town through the Sikh, British and post-independence periods. The town grew around its grain market and its position on the roads linking Ludhiana with Khanna, Doraha and Sirhind — the historic highway belt of the Malwa. After independence it was constituted a municipal council, and its tehsil — including the towns of Maloud and Doraha — became one of Ludhiana district's eastern subdivisions.

The town's modern life follows the agricultural calendar of the Malwa: wheat in winter, paddy in summer, and the mandi busy in both harvests.

Geography & people

Payal lies at about 247 metres above sea level on the Ludhiana–Khanna road, east of Ludhiana city. The municipal council counted 7,923 people in 2011. Punjabi is the everyday language; the town mixes trading families, government servants posted to the tehsil offices, and the farming community. The tehsil's villages grow wheat, paddy and vegetables for the Ludhiana market.

Doraha — the larger municipal town of the tehsil — and Maloud, its nagar panchayat, lie nearby, making Payal tehsil one of the denser rural subdivisions of the district.

Places of interest

Payal is a working administrative town: the tehsil complex, the grain market in season, and the town's gurdwaras and temples are its landmarks. Doraha's historic fort (a Mughal-era sarai on the old imperial highway) is a short drive away, and the Khanna grain market — among Asia's largest — lies just to the east.

Notable people

Payal's distinction is civic: as a tehsil headquarters it has schooled and employed generations of eastern Ludhiana's teachers, patwaris and government servants. The town takes quiet pride in its administrative role — the unglamorous work of running a tehsil, which keeps the Malwa's villages connected to the state.
