Where is Katana?

Katana is a village of Payal tehsil in Ludhiana district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Doraha, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Doraha community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033360, and it covers 132 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 658 people in Katana: 358 men and 300 women, living in 142 households, an average of about 4.6 people per household. Spread over its 132 hectares, the population density works out to about 498 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 838 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 55, about 8 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 196 people, about 30 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 83.58 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.69 per cent and women at 78.78 per cent. The census recorded 347 workers, about 53 per cent of the village. A further 25 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (101 hectares). About 30 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
