Where is Unchi Daud?

Unchi Daud is a village in Payal tehsil of Ludhiana district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Maloud, about 7 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dehlon community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 033283, and it covers 205 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 921 people in Unchi Daud: 484 men and 437 women, living in 181 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 205 hectares, the population density works out to about 449 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 903 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 92, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 446 people, about 48 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 70.57 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 77.55 per cent and women at 62.97 per cent. The census recorded 307 workers, about 33 per cent of the village. Of the 125 main workers, the largest group, 90, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 30 other workers in trade, transport and services and 3 agricultural labourers. A further 182 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (190 hectares). About 15 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 8 hours a day. With 94 cultivators and 47 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
