Where is Andianwali?

Andianwali is a village of Budhlada tehsil in Mansa district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Bareta, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Budhlada community development block and is served by the Andianwali (157 gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036006, and it covers 434 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,210 people in Andianwali: 664 men and 546 women, living in 249 households, an average of about 4.9 people per household. Spread over its 434 hectares, the population density works out to about 279 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 822 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 105, about 9 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 332 people, about 27 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 53.48 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 58.24 per cent and women at 47.82 per cent. The census recorded 617 workers, about 51 per cent of the village. Of the 461 main workers, the largest group, 247, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 184 agricultural labourers and 30 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 156 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Land and farming

Farming covers most of Andianwali's land. Of the village's 434 hectares, 378 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 312 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (281 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (31 hectares). About 56 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 12 hours a day. With 377 cultivators and 194 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.
