Where is Bhakhrial?

Bhakhrial is a village in Budhlada tehsil of Mansa district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Bareta, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Budhlada community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036008, and it covers 254 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,067 people in Bhakhrial: 560 men and 507 women, living in 196 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 254 hectares, the population density works out to about 420 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 905 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 104, about 10 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 512 people, about 48 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 56.59 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 62.1 per cent and women at 50.75 per cent. The census recorded 426 workers, about 40 per cent of the village. Of the 297 main workers, the largest group, 149, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 109 agricultural labourers and 39 other workers in trade, transport and services. A further 129 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Bhakhrial's land. Of the village's 254 hectares, 229 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 226 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (194 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (32 hectares). About 25 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 10 hours a day. With 247 cultivators and 137 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Budhlada, the tehsil headquarters, and Mansa, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Ramgarh Shah Purian, Bhawa, Andianwali and Gorakh Nath.
