Where is Reond Kalan?

Reond Kalan is a village of Budhlada tehsil in Mansa district, Punjab, in the Malwa region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Budhlada, about 15 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Budhlada community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 036002, and it covers 1,208 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 3,945 people in Reond Kalan: 2,058 men and 1,887 women, living in 775 households, an average of about 5.1 people per household. Spread over its 1,208 hectares, the population density works out to about 327 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 917 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 492, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 3,237 people, about 82 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 52.91 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 60.81 per cent and women at 44.36 per cent. The census recorded 1,362 workers, about 35 per cent of the village. Of the 780 main workers, the largest group, 296, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 245 agricultural labourers and 232 cultivators on their own land. A further 582 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Reond Kalan's land. Of the village's 1,208 hectares, 1,104 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 984 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (947 hectares) and wells and tube-wells (36 hectares). About 103 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 11 hours a day. The census recorded 255 cultivators and 733 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.
