Where is Tandian?

Tandian is a village in Sardulgarh tehsil of Mansa district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Malwa region, and the 2011 directory recorded Mansa, about 18 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Jhunir community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 035920, and it covers 618 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,619 people in Tandian: 854 men and 765 women, living in 289 households, an average of about 5.6 people per household. Spread over its 618 hectares, the population density works out to about 262 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 896 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 197, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 727 people, about 45 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 61.25 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 67.19 per cent and women at 54.45 per cent. The census recorded 1,081 workers, about 67 per cent of the village. Of the 648 main workers, the largest group, 264, were cultivators on their own land, ahead of 204 other workers in trade, transport and services and 158 agricultural labourers. A further 433 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Tandian's land. Of the village's 618 hectares, 564 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and 445 hectares of it were irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from canals (445 hectares). About 54 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 6 hours a day. With 302 cultivators and 168 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Sardulgarh, the tehsil headquarters, and Mansa, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Raipur, Bajewala, Barewala Jattan and Bishanpura Urf Jherianwali.
