Where is Bhanguri?

Bhanguri is a village of Dhar Kalan tehsil in Pathankot district, Punjab, in the Majha region of the state. The 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 5 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dhar Kalan community development block and has its own gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027390, and it covers 808 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 1,695 people in Bhanguri: 846 men and 849 women, living in 336 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 808 hectares, the population density works out to about 210 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 1004 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 201, about 12 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 331 people, about 20 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 86.41 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 90.81 per cent and women at 82.22 per cent. The census recorded 485 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 429 main workers, the largest group, 172, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 137 agricultural labourers and 88 cultivators on their own land. A further 56 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Bhanguri's land. Of the village's 808 hectares, 358 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (358 hectares). About 86 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds.
