Where is Hara?

Hara is a village in Dhar Kalan tehsil of Pathankot district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 13 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dhar Kalan community development block and is served by the Ladehti, Chakkar, Magnet gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027398, and it covers 3,722 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 6,800 people in Hara: 3,686 men and 3,114 women, living in 1,256 households, an average of about 5.4 people per household. Spread over its 3,722 hectares, the population density works out to about 183 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 845 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 761, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 964 people, about 14 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 83.52 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 87.95 per cent and women at 78.29 per cent. The census recorded 1,958 workers, about 29 per cent of the village. Of the 1,768 main workers, the largest group, 994, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 363 cultivators on their own land and 351 agricultural labourers. A further 190 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Farming covers most of Hara's land. Of the village's 3,722 hectares, 1,391 hectares were net sown area in the 2011 record, and every sown hectare was irrigated. Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (1,391 hectares). About 108 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. The census recorded 380 cultivators and 393 agricultural labourers, so farming supports many labouring families as well as landholders.

Education in the village runs through one government primary school, 3 government middle schools, 2 government secondary schools and one government senior secondary school, so children can study in the village up to Class 12. The village also had an anganwadi centre and an ASHA health worker.

The directory recorded Pathankot, about 13 kilometres away, as the nearest town, and the nearest railway station was more than ten kilometres away. Dhar Kalan, the tehsil headquarters, and Pathankot, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Narianpur, Tarhari, Thara Jhikla and Tureti.
