Where is Tureti?

Tureti is a village in Dhar Kalan tehsil of Pathankot district in Punjab, India. It lies in the Majha region, and the 2011 directory recorded Pathankot, about 12 kilometres away, as its nearest town. The village falls in the Dhar Kalan community development block and is served by the Durang gram panchayat. In the census record it carries village code 027400, and it covers 335 hectares.

Population and households

The 2011 census counted 2,543 people in Tureti: 1,326 men and 1,217 women, living in 504 households, an average of about 5.0 people per household. Spread over its 335 hectares, the population density works out to about 759 people per square kilometre. The sex ratio was 918 women for every 1,000 men. Children up to the age of six numbered 278, about 11 per cent of the village. Scheduled Castes made up 752 people, about 30 per cent of the population, and no Scheduled Tribe population was recorded.

Literacy in 2011 stood at 86 per cent among residents aged seven and above, with men at 90.08 per cent and women at 81.74 per cent. The census recorded 690 workers, about 27 per cent of the village. Of the 529 main workers, the largest group, 493, were other workers in trade, transport and services, ahead of 18 cultivators on their own land and 11 agricultural labourers. A further 161 people were marginal workers, employed for only part of the year.

Irrigation came mainly from wells and tube-wells (138 hectares). About 98 hectares were under non-agricultural uses such as the village settlement, roads and ponds. Farm power supply was recorded at 14 hours a day. With 26 cultivators and 18 agricultural labourers in the census, most farm work in the village is done by landholding families themselves.

Dhar Kalan, the tehsil headquarters, and Pathankot, the district headquarters, are the practical hubs for administration and onward travel. Neighbouring villages include Tarhari, Hara, Narianpur and Thara Jhikla.
